The short answer: if your iPhone runs iOS 26, it also runs iOS 27. The compatibility list starts with the iPhone 11 and the 2nd-generation SE, the same baseline as last year, so this time no model is being left out. The update arrives for free in September.
The long answer has three levels, because running iOS 27 is not the same as having Apple Intelligence, and having Apple Intelligence is not the same as getting access to the most advanced features. Here is the full list and exactly what your model gets.
All of these models install the full version of iOS 27. The column on the right marks the cutoff that really matters: which ones add Apple Intelligence.
The baseline is still the iPhone 11 and the 2020 SE. A 2019 phone receiving the 2026 operating system means seven years of support, among the best the industry offers.
The first level is for everyone on the list: the performance work that is the highlight of this release —apps open up to 30% faster, AirDrop transfers up to 80% faster, and search in Photos is several times more responsive—, the refined Liquid Glass with its intensity selector, updated apps, and security patches.
The second level is Apple Intelligence, and it requires an iPhone 15 Pro or 15 Pro Max, or any model from the 16 and 17 lines, including the 16e and the iPhone Air. This is where the new photo editing, natural-language search, and, when it launches, Siri AI come in: the beta arrives at the end of the year, first in English and without the European Union.
The third level is the advanced features that run entirely on the device, such as Siri voice personalization. They are reserved for the iPhone 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max, and iPhone Air, the only models on the list with 12 GB of memory.
If you have an iPhone between the 11 and the 15, you get most of the release. iOS 27 is the first update in years whose headline feature is that everything opens and responds faster, something you appreciate more the older the phone is. The only boundary is the artificial intelligence layer; the rest of the system arrives in full.
If your iPhone is older than the 11 —an XR, an XS, or older—, it has been on iOS 18 since last year and, for now, still receives security patches, but it no longer gets new features.
iOS 27 launches as a free update in September, alongside the new iPhones. A developer beta is already available and, starting in July, a public beta will be available for anyone who wants to get ahead. Siri AI arrives later, in beta at the end of the year.
iOS 27 does not force you to change phones: seven years of support for the iPhone 11 is a standard almost no one else meets, and the highlight of this release, performance, reaches the entire list evenly. The real boundary is no longer whether your iPhone updates, but whether it gets Apple Intelligence. And that line, which may feel distant today from a 12 or a 13, will define your next purchase more than any new camera.
