iPad mini with OLED and A20 Pro: lighter and starting at US$699

Apple introduced the iPad mini with A20 Pro on October 26, 2026: an 8.5-inch OLED display, lower weight, and IP67 resistance, starting at US$699. Preorders begin on October 28, with availability starting November 6. But choosing a storage capacity also changes the processor: the 512 GB model has a different CPU and Neural Engine.

What changes in the iPad mini

The update targets people who choose a tablet for its size: reading, drawing, or reviewing documents without carrying an eleven-inch screen. Compared with the iPad mini with A17 Pro, it moves from LCD to OLED, from 8.3 to 8.5 inches, and from 293 to 255 grams in the Wi-Fi version. The most tangible change is in the display and in holding it during long sessions.

Lighter design and IP67 resistance

Thickness drops from 6.3 to 5.4 mm. The finishes are Midnight and Starlight; the Cellular model weighs 263 grams. It keeps Touch ID in the top button.

IP67 means dust resistance and immersion in up to one meter of water for 30 minutes in a lab. According to the conditions in Apple’s announcement, that protection decreases with use, the warranty does not cover liquid damage, and the device should not be charged when wet. It is a margin of safety for accidents, not an invitation to submerge it.

8.5-inch OLED and nano-texture glass

The Super Retina XDR display offers deep blacks, a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio, and minimum brightness of one nit for reading in the dark. The bezels are 24% thinner than on the previous generation.

The tech specs distinguish between 600 nits full-screen brightness and a 1,200-nit peak only in HDR. That peak should not be presented as sustained brightness for all content. Nano-texture glass, optional on 256 and 512 GB, reduces reflections: it makes sense if you work in difficult lighting, not as a required upgrade for everyone.

A20 Pro: what changes depending on capacity

The important difference is in the configuration, not just file storage space. All models have a seven-core GPU; the CPU and Neural Engine change when you choose 512 GB.

CapacityCPUNeural Engine
128 GB5 cores16 cores
256 GB5 cores16 cores
512 GB6 coresTwo 16-core units

Apple advertises improvements of up to 60% in CPU performance and up to 2.7 times in graphics compared with the previous mini. Those are results from its own tests, not our own measurements. For reading and note-taking, the extra core should not determine the purchase; for local AI processes, the higher-end configuration deserves more attention.

Landscape camera and Acoustic Display

The 12 MP Center Stage front camera moves to the long edge, a more natural position for landscape video calls. The rear camera remains 12 MP with 4K video at 60 fps, and adds adaptive True Tone flash for scanning documents.

Acoustic Display integrates bass through the display and places the tweeters between the glass and the enclosure. The N1 chip brings Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread; Cellular adds the C2 modem and eSIM. The real quality of the new audio still needs to be verified with a unit.

iPadOS 27 and the external monitor

The mini takes advantage of the adjustable windows in iPadOS 27. It supports a monitor up to 4K at 60 Hz, but the Apple announcement specifically ties the extended desktop to iPadOS 27.2: connecting a display and extending the desktop are different capabilities.

Apple Intelligence features include photo editing and tools such as Image Wand in Notes. Availability depends on feature, language, and region; some operations with server-based models have daily limits. More local AI capacity should not be confused with unlimited access to cloud services.

Apple Pencil for writing and drawing

It is compatible with Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil USB-C, just like the mini with A17 Pro. If you already have one of those pencils, you can keep using it.

USB-C covers notes and annotations; the Pro adds squeeze and barrel roll gestures, haptic feedback, and Find My. The choice depends on your work with the pencil, not on automatically buying the most expensive accessory.

Smart Folio with TechWoven fabric

The new Smart Folio uses a two-panel structure, magnetic attachment, and more viewing angles. It is made with TechWoven and costs US$79. It is sold separately, just like the pencils.

Price and availability

These are the prices from the Apple Store in the United States with standard glass, before taxes:

CapacityWi-FiWi-Fi + Cellular
128 GBUS$699US$849
256 GBUS$799US$949
512 GBUS$999US$1,149

Nano-texture glass adds US$100 on compatible capacities. Preorders open on October 28, 2026; deliveries and in-store sales begin on November 6 in the 36 countries and regions announced by Apple. Claimed battery life reaches up to ten hours of Wi-Fi web browsing or video; fast charging reaches 50% in about 30 minutes with a 35 W or higher adapter.

Conclusion

If you are looking for a compact tablet for reading, taking notes, and carrying everywhere, the OLED display and lower weight make this generation worth considering. If you already have the A17 Pro and are happy with its display, the upgrade is less urgent. The 256 GB model enables the nano-texture finish; the 512 GB model adds power. Those are two different purchase reasons.
